Rainshadow Journal is a website of news, commentary and photography produced by a collective of retired journalists and co-conspirators, most of us in Port Townsend. Our mission is to provide thoughtful, in-depth journalism, focused mostly on the far corner of the state, defined by the Olympic rain shadow. We plan to explore politics, civics, culture, economics and the environment in the extraordinary place we’ve chosen to live and work.
We have no budget. There is no pay wall or admission fee. We do not pay ourselves. We do this because we believe that a community benefits from good journalism and a free exchange of ideas and perspectives.
While most of us are journalists, we also welcome contributors, including experts, essayists, critical thinkers and perhaps poets.
As an all-volunteer staff, we don’t intend to compete with existing media. Most of us subscribe to The Leader and value its 130-year history of local journalism. But we also understand that newspaper staffers are spread thinly as they try to cover city and county government, police departments, health agencies, business, nonprofits, entertainment, local sports and more. We can’t cover that range of subjects, but we can try to fill some of the inevitable gaps. And we don’t have to worry about antagonizing advertisers, because we don’t have any.
Initially, we will post once or twice a week. But our hope is to grow, adding a blog, arts criticism, humor and more. We will occasionally share postings with Post Alley (postalley.org) a Seattle journalism collective which launched last year. We also hope to collaborate with other information sources, including KPTZ community radio, Olympic Peninsula Environmental News, the Salish Current and others.
Readers, critics or prospective contributors can reach us by email at ross_inkstainedwretch @hotmail.com. Remove the space between H and @ to mail it to me, as we have to protect against spammers.
